How to get to Corvo
Corvo Airport (CVU) is the smallest commercial airport in the Azores. The 30-minute ferry from Lajes das Flores is the practical access route for almost every visitor.
The Atlanticoline ferry (recommended)
The natural way to reach Corvo. Operated by Atlanticoline, the regional ferry company.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Route | Lajes das Flores ↔ Vila do Corvo |
| Crossing time | 30 min |
| Summer frequency | 2 to 4 daily |
| Winter frequency | 3 to 5 weekly |
| Fare | €15 each way |
| First summer departure | Around 8:30 from Lajes |
| Last summer departure | Around 17:30 from Corvo |
| Weather sensitivity | High; cancels in moderate swell |
The ferry runs reliably in summer (around 90% of scheduled sailings depart on time). Winter sailings cancel frequently due to Atlantic swell; check the same-day forecast at atlanticoline.pt before counting on a winter crossing.
SATA flights
Corvo Airport handles a small number of weekly flights, operated by SATA's Bombardier Q200 (37 seats).
| Origin | Frequency | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Flores (FLW) | 1 to 3 weekly | 15 min |
| Faial (HOR) | 2 to 3 weekly | 45 min |
| Terceira (TER) | 1 to 2 weekly | 70 min |
| São Miguel (PDL) | 1 weekly via TER | 2h with connection |
For day-trippers, the ferry is faster, cheaper, more scenic, and more flexible than the flights. The flights are useful for travellers who need to reach Corvo directly from outside the western group, or who are stranded by a multi-day ferry cancellation.
From outside the Azores
There is no direct international service to Corvo. The standard routings:
- Via Flores: the most common pattern. Fly into São Miguel (PDL) or Terceira (TER), connect to Flores (FLW), then ferry to Corvo for a day trip or overnight.
- Direct SATA inter-island: for travellers already in Faial or Terceira, the weekly direct flight to CVU is an option, but you may be stranded if return flights cancel.
From the airport to the village
Corvo Airport is 800 metres east of Vila do Corvo. A 5-minute walk on the paved road, or a €5 taxi (one local taxi, pre-book if you arrive on the late flight). No rental cars at the airport because they are not useful.
Practical advice for the ferry day trip
- Book the morning ferry the day before. In peak summer the small ferry can fill. Walk-in works outside July to August.
- Check the forecast before boarding. If the afternoon return looks marginal, consider an earlier return or skip the trip altogether. Being stranded overnight without a reservation is realistic.
- Bring rain gear. The crossing is open and the Corvo weather can change in 30 minutes.
- Bring lunch money in cash. The single village restaurant takes card but ATM access on Corvo is limited. €30 to €50 in small denominations covers the day.
Combining Corvo with the rest of the western group
Corvo combines naturally with Flores:
- Flores + Corvo: 4 to 6 days total. Base on Flores, day-trip to Corvo on Day 2 or 3. The classic western-group itinerary. See the Flores guide for the other half of the trip.
- Corvo alone: rarely the right choice given the long onward connection required. Most visitors who try this end up frustrated by the limited choice on the island after the third day.
