Where to stay on Flores

Accommodation on Flores is limited but distributed across three areas. Choose by what you want to be close to: the airport (Santa Cruz), the Corvo ferry (Lajes), or the most dramatic landscape (Fajã Grande on the west coast).

Santa Cruz das Flores (north-east)

The capital and the practical default. Most accommodation, the largest restaurant choice on the island, walking access to the small museum and harbour, the airport 3 km away. Drive times from Santa Cruz: 35 minutes to Poço da Alagoinha, 45 minutes to Fajã Grande, 25 minutes to the central plateau, 30 minutes to Lajes.

Three reliable picks:

  • Hotel das Flores. The island's largest modern hotel, 4-star, central Santa Cruz. €100 to €170 per night double. Most rooms with sea views.
  • Aldeia da Cuada. A boutique eco-village of restored stone cottages 5 minutes from Santa Cruz. 12 cottages, €110 to €180 per night. Recommended for travellers wanting the authentic village experience.
  • Pensão do Maciel. Small family-run guesthouse, 8 rooms, €55 to €90 per night. The budget option.

Lajes das Flores (south coast)

The second town, on the south coast 30 minutes from Santa Cruz. Smaller and quieter, with the ferry to Corvo departing from the harbour. Closer to Rocha dos Bordões and the southern waterfalls. Limited restaurant choice compared to Santa Cruz.

Notable: Aldeia da Fajãzinha, a small eco-village of restored cottages on the cliff above Lajes, €100 to €160 per night. Spectacular ocean views, limited services.

Fajã Grande (west coast)

The most dramatic location on the island. The small village sits at the base of a 400-metre cliff on the south-west coast, with the Poço do Bacalhau waterfall cascading down behind the village. The beach is right there, the trail to Poço da Alagoinha is 15 minutes by car.

The downside: 45 minutes' drive from the airport, even more limited restaurant choice than Lajes, and the village is so small that the small handful of guesthouses fill quickly.

  • Casa do Penhasco. A 4-room boutique guesthouse on the cliff. €120 to €180 per night. Spectacular sunsets from the terrace.
  • Casas de Pedra de Fajã Grande. Several small stone cottages in the village, €70 to €120 per night per cottage. Self-catering option.

Booking tips

  • Book early. The whole island has around 250 visitor beds. Summer fills 4 to 6 months ahead.
  • Weather buffer. Flores flights cancel 5 to 10% of trips in winter. Build a buffer night into your stay if you have an international onward connection.
  • Photographers and hikers. Fajã Grande maximises landscape access and sunset photography. The 45-minute drive to and from the airport on arrival and departure days is the trade-off.
  • Corvo combination. If you plan a Corvo day trip, stay in Lajes for the ferry access, or in Santa Cruz and accept the 30-minute drive to Lajes on ferry day.
  • Self-catering. The dining options are narrow. A self-catering cottage with breakfast and picnic supplies bought in Santa Cruz is a sensible pattern for stays over 3 nights.
