Where to stay on Graciosa

Accommodation on Graciosa is genuinely limited. The island has perhaps 200 visitor beds in total, spread across two small hotels, a handful of guesthouses, and a growing number of rural casas. Santa Cruz is the default for most visitors; the rural casas suit travellers who want the off-the-grid version.

Santa Cruz da Graciosa

The capital and the practical default. Walking distance to the small museum, the seafront, the Café Central, and the handful of restaurants. The airport is 5 minutes away by car, and Furna do Enxofre is 15 minutes inland.

Three reliable picks:

  • Graciosa Resort. The island's only 4-star hotel, on the seafront 10 minutes' walk from the town centre. €110 to €170 per night double, depending on season. Pool, restaurant, spa.
  • Pensão Mar e Sol. Mid-range guesthouse in the central streets, 12 rooms, simple but well-kept. €60 to €95 per night.
  • Casa do Capitão. A small restored 19th-century townhouse, 4 rooms, breakfast included. €70 to €110. The most central option.

Praia (south coast)

The second town, smaller and quieter, with access to the coastal pools and the windmills. Limited restaurant choice; most visitors here drive to Santa Cruz for dinner.

Casa de Pedra, a small 3-room guesthouse in a restored basalt-stone village house, €70 to €100 per night.

Rural casas across the island

A growing number of restored farmhouses and stone cottages scattered around the smaller villages. Most are self- catering, suit families or two couples, and rent by the week or weekend.

  • Casa dos Moinhos near Pedras Brancas, a 2-bedroom stone cottage next to the working windmill. €120 to €180 per night for the whole house.
  • Casas Açorianas Graciosa manages several restored cottages across the interior; bookings via casasacorianas.com. €80 to €150 per night.

Price ranges by season

Type Low season (Nov to April) Peak (July to August)
Guesthouse double €45 to €75 €70 to €110
Hotel double €80 to €130 €110 to €180
Rural casa (per night) €70 to €130 €110 to €200

Booking tips

  • Book early. The island has under 200 visitor beds. Summer fills 3 to 4 months ahead.
  • Carnival weekend (late February). The one event that pushes rooms ahead. Book 2 to 3 months ahead.
  • Winter caution. Several guesthouses close from November to March. Confirm by email before booking out of season.
  • Side-trip travellers. If you are visiting Graciosa as a 2-day side trip from Terceira, one of the central Santa Cruz guesthouses works for both nights without needing to move.
