How to get to Terceira
Terceira's Lajes Airport (IATA: TER) is the second-busiest in the Azores after São Miguel. Direct international service exists from Boston year-round and from Lisbon multiple times daily. From most other origins, you connect through Lisbon or through PDL.
From North America
Boston (BOS) is the most useful gateway. SATA Azores Airlines operates a direct Boston-to-Terceira flight 3 to 5 times per week year-round, 4.5 to 5 hours flying time. This route is often cheaper than the equivalent Boston-to-São Miguel because demand is lower. Travellers doing a two-island trip (Terceira + central group) often arrive into Terceira and depart from São Miguel.
From Toronto, New York, Oakland and other North American cities, no direct service. Connect through Boston or through Lisbon. Total elapsed time from Toronto via Boston: around 9 hours.
US passport holders enter visa-free for 90 days. The ETIAS authorisation will apply from late 2026, see the visa formalities guide for the current status.
From Lisbon and mainland Portugal
Lisbon (LIS) to Terceira (TER) is the workhorse route: 3 to 5 daily flights, 2 hours 15 minutes, operated by TAP Portugal and SATA. The most flexible connection for any traveller routing through continental Europe.
Porto (OPO) to TER: 3 to 5 weekly, TAP only, 2 hours. Useful for travellers from northern Portugal or Galicia.
From the rest of Europe
No reliable direct service. Connect through Lisbon (TAP) or through São Miguel (SATA). From London, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid, the via-Lisbon route is the practical answer, total time 5 to 7 hours including the connection.
Occasional summer charters fly directly to Lajes from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Schedules vary year to year; check with the German tour operators rather than the airlines for these.
Inter-island connections
Lajes is one of the two SATA hubs (the other is PDL on São Miguel). Most inter-island routes pass through one or the other.
| To | Frequency | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| São Miguel (PDL) | Several daily | 35 min |
| Faial (HOR) | Several daily | 30 min |
| Pico (PIX) | Daily, sometimes via HOR | 35 to 60 min |
| São Jorge (SJZ) | Daily | 30 min |
| Graciosa (GRW) | 3 to 5 weekly | 20 min |
| Flores, Corvo, Santa Maria | 2 to 4 weekly each | 45 to 90 min |
Inter-island fares for tourists start around €90 one-way, cheaper if booked weeks in advance. The getting around guide covers the SATA pricing model in detail.
Note on the Lajes air base
Lajes Airport is shared with the Lajes Air Base, a Portuguese and US joint military facility. The civilian terminal is separate from the military side. Boston direct flights sometimes carry US Department of Defense passengers heading to or from the base, which is the operational reason that route has survived even at low civilian demand. The base itself is closed to visitors.
Getting from the airport to your accommodation
Lajes Airport is on the east coast, 5 minutes from Praia da Vitória town centre and 25 minutes from Angra do Heroísmo. Options:
- Rental car at the airport. Ilha Verde, Autatlantis, and Wayzor all have desks at the terminal. Reserve in advance, especially summer. €25 to €75 per day depending on season and class.
- Taxi. A taxi to Angra costs around €25 to €35, to Praia da Vitória around €8 to €12. Daytime tariffs; small surcharge at night and weekends.
- Bus. ETAP operates a service to Praia da Vitória and onward to Angra, frequent on weekdays, less so at weekends. Around €3 to €5 per leg.
- Pre-booked transfer. Many hotels offer airport shuttle for €15 to €25 per person. Worth checking when you book accommodation.
Two-island trip planning
Terceira is excellent as part of a two-island combination:
- Terceira + São Miguel: the culture-plus-nature classic. Fly in to TER, ferry/fly to PDL on day 4 or 5, fly out from PDL. 7 to 10 days total.
- Terceira + Faial-Pico: add the central group via the SATA short-hop and the Horta-Pico ferry triangle. 8 to 12 days. The richest combination if you want both UNESCO history and volcanic landscape.
Avoid trying to combine Terceira with a smaller western island (Flores or Corvo) in under 10 days; the flight frequency makes the logistics tight.
