Five days on São Miguel: Sete Cidades, Furnas, whales, plus canyoning, the Vila Franca islet, and one slow rural day. Day-by-day timings, drives, and bookable tours.
Five days is the sweet spot for São Miguel. You cover everything in the 3-day plan with breathing room, plus one adventure activity (canyoning, kayaking, or a longer hike) and a slower rural day. Most travellers who do five days find it the right balance between ticking boxes and actually being there.
This itinerary assumes a rental car for the full duration. The car-free version works for the bookable-tour days but is harder for the rural and adventure days.
The plan in one paragraph
Day 1: arrive PDL, walk the historic centre, dinner on the marina. Day 2: west day, Sete Cidades caldera and Lagoa do Fogo. Day 3: whale watching morning, Furnas afternoon. Day 4: adventure day, canyoning or Vila Franca islet kayak. Day 5: Nordeste rural drive and Caldeira Velha thermal pool, evening flight or last night in PDL.
Total: 5 nights minimum, 6 if your departure flight is early. Base in Ponta Delgada (alternative: 3 nights in PDL plus 2 nights in Furnas).
Day 1: arrival and Ponta Delgada
Same pattern as the 3-day version: arrive PDL in the afternoon, walk the historic centre, dinner on the marina. Take time at the Carlos Machado museum (€3 entry, 90 minutes) if you arrive in the morning.
Evening: dinner at Tasca da Praça for the local version (€12 to €18) or Restaurante Rotas da Ilha for modern Azorean (€30 to €45).
Day 2: Sete Cidades and the western caldera
Same as the 3-day Day 2. Drive yourself or book the Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo tour with lunch (€80, 4.9 rating with 596 reviews). With more time available, add the descent into Sete Cidades village (lunch at Restaurante Verde Romance), walk the Boca do Inferno trail to a less-photographed viewpoint, and finish with a swim at Caloura natural sea pools on the way home.
Day 3: whales and Furnas
Same as the 3-day Day 3 but with more time at Furnas. Morning whale watching trip from PDL (€70, 3 hours). Afternoon drive to Furnas (1h15).
In Furnas: the caldeiras on the lake shore, the village walking circuit, the Terra Nostra Garden thermal pool (€10 entry, 2 to 3 hours). Dinner at one of the Furnas village restaurants serving the local cozido (slow-cooked underground for 6 hours, €18 to €25). Drive back to PDL or stay overnight at Furnas (recommended if your itinerary allows).
Day 4: the adventure day
Choose one of three depending on your activity preference and fitness level.
Option A: Canyoning at Ribeira dos Caldeirões
The most distinctively Azorean adventure activity. Abseils, slides and jumps through a forested canyon. The Ribeira dos Caldeirões canyoning experience is the default option, around €70, 4.9 rating with 761 reviews. 2.5 hours in the canyon, 5 to 6 hours door to door from PDL. See the canyoning activity guide for fitness honest-talk.
Option B: Vila Franca islet kayak and snorkel
The volcanic islet 700 metres off the south coast, with a clear turquoise lagoon at its centre. The Vila Franca do Campo islet kayaking experience runs morning departures from Vila Franca village, around €42, 2.5 hours, 4.8 rating with 334 reviews. Lower fitness requirement than canyoning; the right pick for families. See the kayak tours guide for the full kayak options.
Option C: Lagoa do Fogo hike
The 3-hour return descent to the white-sand beach at the bottom of the crater lake. A 575-metre descent on a marked trail (PR 2 SMI), manageable for anyone in reasonable shape. See the Lagoa do Fogo hike guide for the trail description. Free, but you need a rental car to reach the trailhead.
Whichever you choose, plan a quiet evening: a casual dinner near your accommodation and an early night.
Day 5: Nordeste and a slow farewell
The eastern circuit of São Miguel, slower-paced than the previous four days. Drive 1h30 from PDL to the Nordeste region via the coastal road.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 9:00 | Depart PDL via the EN1-1A north-coast road. |
| 10:00 | Coffee stop at Gorreana tea plantation (free, the only continental European tea estate). |
| 10:30 | Visit the small Gorreana factory and tasting room. |
| 11:30 | Continue to the Nordeste viewpoints. Stops at Miradouro da Madrugada, Ponta da Madrugada lighthouse. |
| 13:00 | Lunch in Nordeste village. Try the small restaurant Cozinha Açoriana for local fare. |
| 14:30 | Drive south through the Furnas mountain road for a final view of the valley. |
| 16:00 | Caldeira Velha thermal pool (€8 entry, on the EN1-1A) for a final soak. |
| 17:30 | Return to PDL. |
| 19:00 | Farewell dinner. Cais 20 for the seafood version (€35 to €55 per person). |
If your flight is the next morning, this leaves Day 6 morning for souvenirs and a slow Ponta Delgada breakfast.

Variations
The Furnas-base version. Spend Days 3 to 5 in Furnas rather than PDL. You wake up next to the caldeiras, soak in Poça da Dona Beija in the evening, and the rural texture is much stronger. The trade-off is the daily drive back to PDL for Days 4 activities and the final airport departure.
The premium version. Same itinerary, premium hotel choices (Furnas Boutique Hotel or White Exclusive Hotel in Sete Cidades), restaurant meals at the top tier, private tour guides for Days 2 and 3. Add €600 to €1000 per person total.
The budget version. Stay in guesthouses, do the bookable group tours rather than private guides, eat the prato do dia at lunch (€10 to €12) and self-cater dinner from supermarket groceries. Reduces total to €700 to €1100 per person.
Next: extend the trip
The 7 days in São Miguel plan adds the eastern Faial da Terra hike, a dedicated culture day in Ponta Delgada, and a more relaxed rest day. If you want to combine São Miguel with another island, the 5-day São Miguel plus 3-day Pico combination is the natural pairing; see the Pico guide for the other half.
